| Description |
| The title 'The First Outing' suggests youth and innocence, but also a coming of age. This girl is entering the world of society. Placed in a loge, she is on display, yet Renoir’s perspective keeps her naively unaware of being observed. The flowers held in her lap are a symbol of femininity. It is possible then, that this "First Outing" is also symbolic of a sexual coming of age. Renoir completed this piece in 1876 and it is now held at the National Gallery in London. |
